Giant snails, Whack-a-mole, pipe bands, hip hop wrestling and dance battles made for an exciting day in the city
As the varying fragrances from the nearby LUSH store fill the air on Market Street on Saturday afternoon, a Red Bull truck comes veering down the road to the sound of TYLA’s Truth or Dare. With crowds circling, two groups of young performers emerge for a dance battle opposite Marks and Spencer.
A staple in the city for the last 12 years, this year’s Manchester Day features around 300 performers, 90 pop-up theatrical performances, and 280 community members. Amongst them, there’s acrobatics and dance from MotionHouse’s Wild show - representing nature through performance and metal poles that symbolise trees - and the theatrical circus stylings of dance troupe Bamboo who perform with, you guessed it, large sticks of bamboo.
“We did twelve years of the parade and it was a difficult decision to halt it last year but it felt like it was time to add a bit more to the offering,” Coun Karney, who is the Chair of Manchester Day, said. “I think people want more interaction and engagement - there’s about 200 choices of things to do, we want people to get involved and have magical memories.
“It’s a big time for sport both on a global scale and here in Manchester right now,” Yarv Abbas, the Deputy CEO and Head of Sport and Events at Manchester Active, said. “We are seeing how that is inspiring people to find out more about how they can take part in sport.”View gallery Asked why Manchester is becoming a lead destination for big sporting events, Yarv adds: “There’s great transport links here, lots of great hotels, and the profile of the two football clubs certainly helps.
As evident with their try-out and coach sessions on Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester Futsal Club are one of Manchester’s stand-out sport heroes this year. The club were recently named National Futsal League Champions and will host the tier one tournament of the UEFA Futsal Champions League at the Manchester Velodrome next month.
In St Ann’s Square, funfair-style games were taking place, whilst Deansgate had a life-size arcade set-up featuring snakes and ladders, an interactive version of 1972 video game Pong, and a real-life Space Invaders.
