Manny Machado leaves Padres-Rockies game after ankle injury
began Sunday’s game trying to stop a losing streak at Coors Field at nine games. Something potentially far worse than another loss happened almost immediately.for at least a time after he sprained his left ankle in the first inning against the Rockies.
Machado ran hard to try to beat out a dribbler in front of the mound and slipped on first base as he crossed the bag. His left ankle appeared to roll as he took his first step on the dirt after the bag, and he immediately went to the ground and stayed there holding the area above his ankle. He eventually was helped off the field, putting slight pressure on his left leg as he walked with athletic trainers Mark Rogow and Ben Fraser each having one of his arms draped over their shoulders.
The team announced later that X-rays on Machado’s ankle were negative and said he had been diagnosed with a sprain. The severity of the sprain was not immediately known. Machado entered Saturday leading the Padres in virtually every offensive category, including with a .949 OPS, 12 home runs and 46 RBIs. His OPS ranks third in the National League.Tatis, the 2021 NL home run leader, had left wrist surgery in March and is not expected back until at least early July. This article was updated with the team’s announcement regarding X-rays.
