With 5,000 acres growth today it passed the McKinney Fire.
The Mosquito Fire grew by 5,000 acres Wednesday and became the biggest California wildfire of the season.
The growth since Wednesday morning pushed the Sierra Nevada wildfire past the McKinney Fire, which burned 60,138 acres in Siskiyou County last month. Persistent wind out of the southwest is expected to continue over the next few days, said Jonathan Pangburn, a fire behavior specialist for CalFire, but cool temperatures will aid the firefighting efforts. There is also a likelihood of moderate rain — about a quarter-inch — as early as Sunday, Pangburn said.
More than 11,000 people have been evacuated, and about 7,800 homes are threatened, the sheriff’s offices said.; 36 buildings were listed as destroyed, most of them along Volcanoville Road. In Placer County, 64 buildings were known to have been destroyed.
