Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who endorsed Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) for president in 2024, joked in a new interview that the Florida governor should be indicted, alluding to the polling boost former President Donald Trump saw after each of his indictments and target letters were announced.
“I’ve said we got to figure out, we got to find some judge in Florida that’ll indict DeSantis quick, to close this indictment gap,” Massie suggested. The Kentucky Republican told the Miami Herald,"I feel sympathy for Trump. And I understand why people are gravitating towards him in this time. It’s a referendum on the swamp versus Trump, and it’s seen as, if you don’t support Trump in this moment, some of the voters see it as being swampy.
As legal troubles emerge and develop for Trump, Republican primary voters have grown more supportive of the former president. Trump's various indictments and target letters have also been spread apart, sometimes by days and others by a few weeks. The legal woes have remained in voters' minds throughout the summer and are renewed with each progression, as polling data have shown.
Earlier this month, Trump announced the receipt of a target letter related to the federal government's investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. He further said Monday that he expects an indictment in the investigation to come"any day now."Trump's campaign, likely after noticing the uptick in support following the indictments and target letters, has moved to fundraise on his legal troubles.
The constant barrage of developments in Trump's various cases has made it nearly impossible to tell if the strategies of Republican candidates are effective since they can't seem to break through the noise. The candidates also may be handicapping themselves by refusing to criticize Trump for the large legal baggage he would carry to a general election, according to GOP strategists.
