At 7-1, 230 pounds, Lively impressed evaluators with his interior defensive presence as a rim protector, smooth help defender and mobile switching option. No doubt he will now become a focal point of what Dallas hopes will be a turnaround season on defense and in their frontcourt rotation. The Mavericks allowed 116.1 points per 100 possessions last season — sixth-worst in the NBA — after ranking seventh best during coach Jason Kidd’s first season. Their 3.7 block-per-game average ranked third-last in the league.
