The Sturm Graz wing-back will be hoping to make his senior Dark Blues debut in the Nations League double header with Poland and Portugal
Max Johnston wore his dad’s old Scotland shirt to watch the Euros with his mates – now he hopes to return the favour by handing over the first of his own.
“If I can get my first Scotland cap it would be a special moment. If I get that cap I will give my first strip to my parents, for sure. Johnston said: “I had been out at training when the squad was announced. My phone went into meltdown with messages. There were a few notifications with Scotland flags – that is when I realised I was in the squad.
When Johnston quit Motherwell for Graz just over 13 months ago, little did he expect Austrian Bundesliga and cup gongs would follow so soon. The wing-back had to be patient but said: “It was an enjoyable first season. It is one where I have learned a huge amount and that is something I am very grateful for.
“At Motherwell I was playing in a back five and I could get forward a lot. At Sturm Graz they have really tried to take me out of my comfort zone and to improve my weaknesses.
