Mayor Turner unveils $17.8M 'One Clean Houston' plan to combat illegal dumping
Standing beside an illegal dumpsite strewn with discarded furniture and garbage bags in the Greater Fifth Ward, Turner outlined his new"One Clean Houston" plan. With a $17.8 million budget for the next two years, mostly from federal American Rescue Plan Act funds, he said the initiative’s goal is to address the recurring blights that keep appearing in distressed areas.
In 2022, Houstonians reported 4,650 cases of illegal dumping, with neighborhoods including Greater Fifth Ward, Acres Home, Sunnyside, Trinity/Houston Gardens and Central Southwest seeing the greatest numbers of complaints, according to city 311 data. Most of the new funding — $14.5 million — will go toward additional trash collection equipment and services to speed up site cleanups.Another $2.
The city also plans to invest $50,400 in a pilot neighborhood drop-off program, assisting residents in areas most affected by dumping to legally dispose of unwanted items.
