MBTA engineers are inspecting the ceilings of all subway stations after a 20-pound panel fell onto the Harvard Station platform, narrowly missing a pedestrian.
No one was hurt when the 45-year-old panel fell. The close call was captured on video released by the public transit agency on Friday. T officials blamed its collapse on corrosion.
So far in its review, the T said it has removed 10 of the more than 400 ceiling panels at the Red Line stop in Cambridge. Interim MBTA General Manager Jeffrey Gonneville said panels in other stations also may be removed by inspectors. "In these areas and these stations where you may not be able to actually get up and visually inspect what is behind these panels, we're going to begin removing these panels system wide," he said.
Gonneville said most T stations feature similar drops ceilings for aesthetic purposes, and the panels do not contribute to the structural integrity of stations.
