The nation's favourite cake/biscuit (we're not getting involved in that argument) has been given a bizarre new flavour - but it's clear that not everybody is happy about it
Launching more than 90 years ago, the popular treat has long stuck to what it knows: a fluffy genoise sponge filled with sweet orange jelly and topped with dark chocolate. Occasionally, you'll see a raspberry or blackcurrant Jaffa Cakes hit the the shelves - but a bold new flavour is now dominating social media.
Inspire by one of the UK's favourite beverages, McVitie's hoped the bizarre flavour will attract a new surge of younger shoppers. The Cola Bottle flavour Jaffa Cakes bars first debuted in Asda on June 10, but were only available for a limited time. However, the moreish snacks have now been spotted in Tesco stores, and are also available to order online. Priced at £1.25 for a pack of 10, the vegetarian-friendly bars cost just 12 per cake/ biscuit/ whatever you want to call them.
"McVitie's Jaffa Jakes Cola Bottle flavour is tailormade for those who've got the bottle to branch out and give bold new flavour combinations a go," said MD Adam Woolf. "We're also very confident this will appeal to shoppers, having come out on top as the best-performing flavour among 18-34 olds in our pre-launch testing."
After being posted on viral food account New Foods UK, swathes of social media users flocked to the comments section to hail the treat, with many tagging their friends and family in the post. "These are mega," one person raved. Another agreed, commenting: "I order them all the time when do a shop." A third added: "Banging," while a fourth wrote: "They were pretty decent." However, others blasted the new treats, arguing that only the orange flavour should be offered. "Are you kidding me? P*** off. They should be kept orange," one user fumed.
