Medicaid isn’t serving Texas patients well. Expanding it would be a mistake | Opinion

If the problems with Medicaid are driving people to pay out of pocket, cross into Mexico for care, or just go without insurance altogether, why then are some lawmakers and many in the media pushing to expand Medicaid and put millions more Texans on this poorly performing program? Texans do have other options. Last year, the Legislature passed several reforms that, when fully implemented, will open new alternatives for the uninsured, those dissatisfied with Medicaid, and others struggling to afford expensive employer-based plans. Lawmakers even made some small but important changes to improve Medicaid by helping low-income mothers with new children and by reducing prescription drug costs for the uninsured.
