Medical marijuana stores opened in Georgia after sales were delayed for years by regulatory challenges. The first dispensaries opened in Macon and Marietta.
"Thousands of Georgians will be able to have improved quality of life through access to medical cannabis here in our state," Allen Peake, a former Republican state representative from Macon who advocated for the legalization of medical marijuana, told The Associated Press. "The sky is not going to fall if medical cannabis is provided to Georgia citizens.
Several companies that were denied licenses have filed lawsuits. Four other production licenses are tied up in the courts.Nearly 40 states already have medical marijuana programs. "We just hit the lottery. We finally got to a point where we could actually walk in instead of having to meet in a parking lot and pick up our oil," Jim Wages said. "It's such a relief."

Georgia's Kemp veers from Trump, but state GOP not moving onGeorgia Gov. Brian Kemp is trying to steer the Republican Party away from Donald Trump and his 2020 election lies, but his state party shows little interest in moving on. At local party meetings last weekend, Republicans in a coastal Georgia district elected a chairperson who denies the legitimacy of her primary loss to Kemp last year, and in metro Atlanta, Republicans considered a resolution rejecting Trump's 2020 defeat.
