A four-bedroom, 6,671-square-foot vintage Mediterranean-style mansion in Elmhurst is available for $2.95 million, and it is the west suburb’s highest-priced listing.
Built in 1929 and located just south of downtown Elmhurst, the ivy-covered mansion was owned in the early 1950s by Burl Dollens, who then was a vice president for General Motors and the general manager of GM’s onetime Electro-Motive Division locomotive plant in McCook.
The current owners paid $1.5 million for it in 2001. They then remodeled and expanded the mansion in 2004. The mansion has six bathrooms, seven fireplaces, a first-floor English pub, a custom Amish kitchen, a finished basement and a four-car garage. Outside on the 0.73-acre property — which is unusually large for Elmhurst — are a complete renovated pool and spa, bluestone walkways and patios, an expansive front lawn, a gazebo, extensive gardens and a covered terrace with an outdoor fireplace.
In the mid-1990s, an earlier owner had developed a “Great Gatsby”-era garden that was re-created from photographs taken in the 1920s. The mansion first was listed in March 2021 for $3.75 million and then was reduced to $3.37 million in July. It then underwent another price cut, to $2.95 million, in September.Sales in the $2.5 million to $3.5 million price range are increasingly common in Elmhurst. In November, a seven-bedroom, 11,108-square-foot mansion in south Elmhurst sold for an Elmhurst record sale price of $3.35 million, and a six-bedroom, 9,456-square-foot mansion on South Street sold in November for $3.1 million.
