Elodie Dérond’s creative process begins with a question simple in expression yet taxing in execution: “What do we want to share?” For Dérond and her creative partner, Tania Doumbe Fines, that could be a bench made from laminated wood with curved legs or perhaps a stool with a leaf-like seat—anything that shows off “what we would like the world to appreciate, maybe more, or better.
At the end of 2020, the two moved back to Dérond’s Caribbean home country and based ibiyanε there. Dérond doesn’t know if it will stay. But for now, they’re content crafting amid the balmy weather and palm trees. Their current process? Stacking laminated wood, extracting their desired form out of it, and combining it all together. Doumbe Fines does the cutting, while Dérond does the sanding. “She can be really practical while I’m being dreamy,” Dérond says of their working relationship. We show patience in different areas.” All of their work is functional, yet the form is distinct; they often take traditional shapes found in African woodworking and update them with their own, millennial spin.
