New York City health officials are attempting to eliminate childhood lead exposure during the next decade
A small drugstore in Manhattan’s Chinatown had a few unusual boxes of skin-lightening cream and some other “well being” pills that on a recent day sparked an interest in two shoppers, who scrutinized the packaging and ingredients lists.
The two buyers, however, weren’t looking for a beauty or health fix. They were research scientists from the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene who were covertly buying products that they thought might contain lead or other hazardous ingredients that could sicken a person.
