He was just 24 when he departed Plymouth, England aboard the Mayflower with his wife Elizabeth and younger brother Gilbert on Sept. 16, 1620. Yet the Pilgrims landed in the middle of what's known as The Little Ice Age — a 500-year period of unusually cold weather. Elizabeth Winslow was among the first winter’s victims.
