Patricio plays with Gimnasia in Buenos Aires goal is to make it to Europe as soon as possible
No matter where you go in this world, the Irish diaspora is everywhere, you can’t escape the Irish no matter how hard you try. Last weekend’s clash with England at the Aviva Stadium was a stark reminder of that with Declan Rice and Jack Grealish scoring for the visitors. Ireland has always benefited massively from players born outside the island.
Schroeder’s father Bruno moved to Ireland for work where he met his wife Mary Jo Brizzell. But in 2005 shortly after Schroeder’s brother Sam was born in Ireland, the family moved to Argentina to help with the family farm as Bruno’s father was in poor health. Patricio continued to develop in the academy and became the starting goalkeeper for the first team at just 16 years old. This achievement didn’t go unnoticed as many top Argentinian clubs wanted to sign him but it was Gimnasia who snapped up the talented goalkeeper who joined the club in February 2024.
Despite being born and bred in Bueno Aires, yearly trips to Kilrea to visit family only strengthened Schroeder’s connection to the country. He said, “My family go to visit Ireland early summer for a month and although I haven’t been since 2019 because of football, I love the country and have great memories of summers there.
