Niomi McConnell was just 16 when she set up her own east end football academy, two years on she is coaching 30 kids and has won the admiration of the community.
Young football enthusiast Niomi McConnell has won SFA Glasgow volunteer coach of the year as she strives to introduce the game to young girls.
The 18-year-old set up an East End football academy when she was only 16 and now coaches 30 children every week. Niomi holds training sessions at Easterhouse Football Academy at the Stepford Fare Scotland grounds in Edinburgh Road for under 12 girls. Niomi, from Tollcross, said: "I opened my own girls' academy at 16. I have 30 girls who come and play three times a week. Football is my life 24 hours a day seven days a week."Earlier this month, the teenager's dedication saw her win SFA best volunteer coach in the West Region for 2023. Niomi who is busy working, going to college and playing soccer for Athena Glasgow as well as volunteering said she was "privileged" to win the award for coaching.
Daniel Cameron, founder of Easterhouse Football Academy, who works for Fare Scotland, said: "Niomi has been a volunteer for two years. She has never let us down."Councillor Burke said "Niomi is a superstar."
