Megan Rapinoe confirms retirement plan as influential superstar prepares to bring down the curtain on glittering career
Megan Rapinoe has confirmed that she'll retire from football at the end of the current season.Rapinoe confirmed the news of her retirement in a press conference leading up to the World CupHaving won the World Cup on two occasions and picking up the 2019 Ballon d’Or Féminin, the 38-year-old is also a two-time Olympic medalist having won gold with her country at London 2012 and bronze in Tokyo.
Rapinoe is also a hugely influential activist having publicly come out as gay in 2012 and becoming an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, racial inequality, voter rights, and gender and pay equity. Speaking in a press conference, Rapinoe confirmed: "It is with a really deep sense of peace and gratitude and excitement that I want to share with you guys that this will be my last season, my last World Cup and my last NWSL season.MORE ON WOMEN'S WORLD CUP"I feel so honoured to have represented this country and this federation for so many years, it's truly been the greatest thing that I've ever done and is something I'm so grateful for.
Rapinoe will captain USA at this summer's World Cup where she'll be keen to add to her 199 caps and 63 goals. Currently playing for OL Reign in the NWSL, Rapinoe's career could end at the end of the regular season, or November if they reach the play-off final.
