Melanie Brown opened up to OK! all about her new warts-and-all book, her past trauma and how she got over it, her upcoming nuptials and a reunion with the Spice Girls
When the Spice Girls formed 30 years ago, it was all about Girl Power. Three decades on, for Melanie Brown, aka Scary Spice, it still is. With a potential reunion with her former bandmates on the cards and planning for her wedding to fiancé Rory McPhee in full swing, when OK! caught up with the star, it was instantly clear that she’s a woman in full control of and loving her own life.
Mel isn’t just surviving these days, but thriving, and has a new happiness with Rory. “If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be engaged and getting married, I would’ve laughed my head off,” she says, while glancing towards her finacé, who is seated in the background of our call. “Love wasn’t on my radar. I told myself I didn’t need it and that I was fine by myself. I was broken and I needed to heal. And then there was Rory...
“We recently visited St Paul’s Cathedral. I’ve got my MBE there so it means I can get married there, too. We met the Bishop and, you know, because I’ve been married twice before, I had to give reasons on why I wanted to get married again. After I explained to them why my first marriage and my second marriage ended, I thought they’d say, ‘Oh, dear Lord, you need to have a good man,’” she laughs.
“I have the option to include her in the wedding but she only weighs three pounds and my ring is quite heavy,” Mel laughs, before confessing that her doggie pal sleeps between her and Rory at night. One thing is certain about the big day, though – it will be infused with love from start to finish. “I want it to be all about Rory and I. Simple as that,” she states.
In it she reflects on how she pieced herself back together – going from the realisation her ex-husband had taken control of her finances and she had to live in her mother’s bungalow in Leeds, to a sell-out tour with the Spice Girls and being made a Patron of Women’s Aid. Mel details a list of 15 signs of domestic abuse to look out for including terrifying red flags, such as intimidating you with guns or knives or controlling who you see, where you go, or what you do, to something as seemingly small as telling you that you can never do anything right.
“I wanted to give a true account of what I went through. Some people think, ‘You’ve left him, the worst is over.’ But I had a lot of rebuilding to do. When the Spice Girls were performing at Wembley Stadium, for example, I was going back to a bedroom at my mum’s house. I’d gone from living a glamorous life in Los Angeles to that. It was a learning process,” she says.
