The American Academy of Sleep Medicine urges parents to consult a doctor or health care professional first before giving their children melatonin as a sleep aid — here's why.
One 2017 Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine study examined the melatonin content in approximately 30 supplements. It found that over 71% of supplements did not meet the label claims.
This study"found that the actual content in these supplements was very inaccurate," said Dr. Baljinder S. Sidhu, a pulmonologist and sleep specialist who is the co-owner of Pacific Coast Critical Care Group in Southern California. Pediatric melatonin ingestions reported annually to U.S. poison control centers increased by 530% during 2012–2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
