Dozens of locals and fellow service members – some of whom also served in Afghanistan – gathered to remember those 13 service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice on that day, as they worked to help remove the remaining troops that were ordered to leave the war-torn country.Three of The Fallen 13 hailed from Southern California – Corporal Hunter Lopez, 22-years-old, Lance Corporal Dylan R. Merola, 20-years-old and Lance Corporal Kareem M. Nikoui, 20-years-old.
The memorial’s installation efforts began back in September, led by community members and volunteers like Anthony Simoneau and his wife Tina. They viewed the memorial as, “a permanent memorial for all of them,” in a highly trafficked area in Norco, “a place where everybody can come visit… just to sit and reflect and think about what we all have and what they gave us.”
