It now costs £1.25 to send a card or letter in the post by first class but such classifications of stamps had not been introduced when this picture was taken.has again joined forces with its friends at Watford Museum to look back at structures, objects or businesses from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated and this week we recall the sorting office in Clarendon Road.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “There have been a number of Post Office sorting offices in Watford. The first was in Queens Road at the corner of Derby Road but it was moved to Clarendon Road in 1929. “This photo shows the Clarendon Road buildings in 1962 with a post box and postage-stamp dispensing machines. I believe 3d was the lowest rate at this time.“The sorting office building was attached to Hyde Lodge and was between St John's Road and Woodford Road.Comments: Our rules
