There will be many crews, groups, and clubs lining the various corrals at theThe group was created in 2014 after a similar program that was part of the Chicago Area Runners Association folded. The mentoring program for Chicagoland high school students taught life lessons through running and participated in races between the 5K and half marathon distances.The volunteers and mentors made the program successful, and when word got out that it would no longer be funded, they decided to create SRC.
“When we recruit, the students always say they don’t like running, and we always tell them you can be a couch potato and still run with us,” Garcia said. “That’s when they go on a physical and mental transformation as they go. And that’s what it’s all about: the journey, and showing these kids that there is a whole world outside of their community and that nothing is impossible.
Each group breaks off into pace groups that range from 8 minutes to 13 minutes. These groups often bond over the long runs through conversation and playlists that each pace group creates and plays while they are out.
