How does a team go from dominating F1, winning a record eight championships in a row, to its season looking like a write-off after Round 1 of 23? Mercedes clearly got its car wrong. LukeSmithF1 on the team's struggles.
Last year’s change in F1’s technical regulations, which determine the designs of the cars, was the big turning point for Mercedes after its run of titles between 2014 and 2021. The blank canvas erased its longstanding advantages over the rest of the field. Teams interpreted the regulations in different ways, pursuing different design concepts. As the season went on, most teams fell into the category of following either a Red Bull-style car or a Ferrari-style car.
The qualifying and race result in Bahrain only served to drum home that Mercedes, by sticking to its concept, had got it wrong — particularly with Aston Martin, with a car bearing similarities to the Red Bull of last year, taking such a big step forward. But Wolff was confident after the race it was possible to turn things around regardless of any budget cap constraints. “We just need to decide which direction we are going and put all the resource behind it,” he said. “We are still developing one car. The question is which car.”
That doesn’t mean it cannot ask tough questions about whether the right people and processes are in place. “I’m not bulls—-ing myself and I’m not bulls—-ing you guys,” he told the media. “I have tried all these years to be transparent and honest. What I’m saying here is how I feel right now. I’m not overreacting or underreacting. As a matter of fact, the gap is very big, and in order to catch up, we need to make big steps.”
