Mercury exposure during pregnancy could boost growth rates of fetus and infant elsevierconnect Mercury Exposure Infant FetalDevelopment

By Dr. Liji Thomas, MDNov 10 2022Reviewed by Aimee Molineux Today we are surrounded by artificial chemicals, both those introduced deliberately and those that contaminate the environment inadvertently as a consequence of their use in other applications.

The Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has set limits on fish consumption in pregnancy because of this, including fish like mackerel and cod, of which 400 g is the upper limit per week, as well as shark and tuna, with a recommended intake of only 100 g per week. This included approximately 330 pregnant women attending several university hospitals in South Korea with their newborn infants at the time of birth. Blood and urine samples from pregnant women and the umbilical cord and placental samples were tested for MeHg, along with the first urine and meconium. In addition, expressed breast milk and the infant's hair were collected on day 30.

Fetal tissues, including placenta, cord blood, meconium, and infant hair, are all enriched for Hg compared to maternal blood, with hair samples showing concentrations 20-174 times that of maternal blood. The exposure during fetal life affected newborn length at birth, which showed a positive correlation with cord blood Hg. This holds good even after adjusting for maternal characteristics, including the body mass index . However, head circumference and birth showed no such correlation.
