The Met Office has issued an updated long-range weather forecast spanning Christmas Eve to January 7
The Met Office's latest long-range forecast hints at the possibility of sleet and snow "likely at times" over the festive period, but also suggests that "more settled conditions are possible" this Christmas. The dream of waking up to a blanket of snow on Christmas Day could become a reality for some, yet it remains uncertain if this December 25 will deliver the wintry wonderland many hope for.
While snow is more commonly seen in January and February, the Met Office defines a white Christmas as the observation of a single snowflake falling anywhere in the UK within the 24-hour period of December 25. Historically, the Met Office would only consider its own building in London when declaring a white Christmas, but now other iconic locations are taken into account, including Edinburgh Castle, Coronation Street in Manchester, Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, and Buckingham Palace.
But this far out, these are "just hints," and according to Netweather, the overall picture is expected to be on the mild side. Meanwhile, the Met Office's latest forecast says this week's weather will be calmer and colder, with mist and fog likely to be the biggest issue. Fog may form in central and southern Scotland and across Northern Ireland due to overnight clear skies, with the mercury plunging to -3C or -4C.
