Aurora Borealis, at this time of night, in this part of the country
The Met Office has urged people to look to the skies across Yorkshire and several areas of the UK tonight and Monday, February 27 to see the Northern Lights.
In a tweet shared just before 6.30pm, the Met Office said: "The Aurora Borealis may be visible as far south as central England tonight where skies remain clear. The Northern Lights are also likely to be seen again on Monday night."The Met Office's own map suggests the light display could move in from about 7pm tonight through to about 4am tomorrow morning.
The beautiful 'curtains' of light are then caused by the lines of force in the Earth’s magnetic field. Countries closer to the Arctic Circle are often best associated with the spectacle. "The lights generally extend from 50 miles to as high as 400 miles above the Earth's surface...The best conditions to view the lights are when the sky is dark and clear of any clouds.
