Politicians who post artificial intelligence-generated images like the fake pictures of Donald Trump getting arrested will be exempt from takedowns or fact-checking by Meta, according to staff involved in the matter.
Meta told a group of political operatives that it would handle sensitive AI-generated images not by treating them as manipulated media, which would entail removal under certain circumstances, but rather through its fact-checking program, according to the Washington Post. Fact-checking would only entail placing a warning label on the content — and politicians are exempted from fact-checking, meaning that AI-generated content posted by Trump or President Joe Biden would get a pass.
Trump, through the exemptions for politicians, has indeed posted AI-generated content — specifically, last month, he posted an AI-generated image of himself praying.AI-generated images have caused quite a stir in politics recently. AI-generated photos of Trump running from law enforcement and in jail went viral shortly before his arrest last week. The image generator banned the journalist responsible for the images in response but never said why.
Meta stated months before Trump's restoration to the platform that it would not fact-check Trump's claims. The former president is subject to several guardrails designed to ensure that he does not spread content that could cause harm or disrupt the 2024 election.
