The moves are connected, according to Licata, who cohosts a midday show on WFAN with Brandon Tierney. He also believes that PR-wise, hiring Mendoza was a bad look, which Tierney pushes back on a bit.
“If Stearns thinks that Mendoza is that much better than everybody except Counsell, who probably didn’t want to come here, I don’t think that PR stuff is as important because, eventually, if he’s proven right, that goes away,” Tierney said,“Deflating, embarrassing, you name it,” Sal replied.
Though some are questioning the hire, Mendoza, 43, has established himself as a respected voice around baseball in 15 years with the Yankees organization. He managed in the minor leagues and was most recently the bench coach under manager Aaron Boone for the past four seasons. He previously also worked as an infield coach and a roving defensive instructor.“Why didn’t the Yankees hire him? He’s been in the organization for 15 years, which means he pre-dates Aaron Boone,” Licata said.
