The Ballymoney rider's achievements at the Isle of Man TT were recognised by a celebratory event at Stormont on Monday
It's a question often asked of Michael Dunlop. What keeps pulling him back to a sport that has brought his family so much tragedy?
His famous racing father Robert – a five-time TT winner – died following a crash at the North West 200 in 2008, while his older brother William was fatally injured in a crash at the Skerries 100 road races 10 years later. It was back in June that Dunlop claimed a four-timer at the Isle of Man, a series of wins which saw him surpass the longstanding record of his legendary uncle Joey, which had stood at 26 since 2000.The 35-year-old believes he will continue to race as long as he's "competitive and winning races".
"I want to keep winning races, that is my main thing. I don't want to not win races. I don't want to reach a point where I am not competitive or winning.Dunlop has often been compared to his legendary racing relatives, but even though he now stands as the most successful rider in TT history, he insists his uncle Joey will always be the 'King of the Mountain'.
"That's just the way it is. I just want to keep winning races and doing Northern Ireland proud, and the Dunlop name. I want to keep the name at the top of the game as well. Dunlop attended Stormont on Monday with the Supersport machine that earned him two wins at this year's Isle of Man TT, including his record-breaking 27th success.
