Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) issued a warning Sunday that if Ukraine enters NATO, it could spell war between the United States and Russia.

McCaul appeared on CNN's State of the Union to react to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's recent interview, where he claimed most NATO states approve of Ukraine joining. The Texas representative said the country still has a long way to go before admission, and preferred an"incremental" strategy, as a hasty introduction could be disastrous.“I think first, they have to win the counter-offensive.

As the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, McCaul said he believes"it’s way too premature to be talking about" Ukraine joining NATO. Once a settlement between Ukraine and Russia is established, McCaul suggested Ukraine could successfully join. McCaul approved of President Joe Biden's recent decision to send cluster munitions to the currently war-torn country.Cluster munitions can inflict four-football field lengths of damage when deployed. Their impact has led to more than 100 countries banning the weapon.

Fellow Reps. Ilhan Omar and Sara Jacobs disagreed with Cotton and Biden, introducing an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that effectively prohibits transferring cluster munitions.
