'It's incredibly sad': Mick McCarthy tribute to Blackpool fan Tony Johnson following tragic death after Burnley game
Blackpool boss Mick McCarthy has paid tribute to supporter Tony Johnson who died following the club’s draw with Burnley last weekend.
The 55-year-old was found with a serious head injury near The Manchester pub at 7pm last Saturday after a fight broke out involving around 15 people. After being administered CPR at the scene, Mr Johnson was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries in the early hours of Monday morning. A lifelong Blackpool fan, the club opened a book of condolence in the Moretti Lounge for supporters to pay their respects with a memorial service also being held for the grandfather. McCarthy, members of his squad and other club officials attended the event with the head coach speaking of the incredible sadness the entire Blackpool FC community felt.“A dad, brother, son or whoever shouldn’t go to a football match and not come home,” McCarthy said.
On the total, McCarthy added: “I can understand how so much has been raised because of the emotion that was there for him.
