Microsoft's plans for the Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 should be welcomed by the community.
The Surface Duo launched with Android 10, and did not receive an update to Android 11 until last month - an embarrassingly long time given the size of Microsoft as a company. Thankfully the Duo 2 launched with Android 11 , but both devices are waiting on Android 12.
Bowden’s discussion suggests that Microsoft is not only going to spend 2022 focusing on software updates rather than hardware, but skip over Android 12 and move directly to, Google’s optimised version of Android 12 that focuses on compatibility and comfort on tablets, chrome books, and folding devices with continuous or dual screens.
Given the long wait that Surface Duo owners had for Android 11, and the smaller target audience for the Duo and Duo 2 , focusing on the software experience and the still radical dual-screen nature feels like the right call. It illustrates continued support to the community, it brings both the Duo and Duo 2 to the same level as other flagship devices, and it gives the hardware team more time to craft something unique for the Duo 3, rather than just bumping up the processor and storage specs.
