Historically, it was a working-class aspiration to have a wee cottage, caravan or hut in the countryside. But that every household could have a getaway place in the countryside – we certainly have enough empty land to make that happen.
Five Scottish New Towns were designated from 1947 to 1966: East Kilbride in 1947, Glenrothes in 1948, Cumbernauld in 1956, Livingston in 1962 and Irvine in 1966.
