The former referee's admission over a VAR decision made during the game between Chelsea and Tottenham will not help his former colleagues
Only now there are new question marks over perceived biases. Who is the VAR and who are his mates? Might they have thought differently on a close call, just as Dean did? We can only hope not but integrity takes another hit nevertheless.
The silliest thing in all this is that Taylor did not need Dean’s preferential treatment as a “mate”. Taylor is as good as they get in the Premier League, on a par with Michael Oliver. Few would have chastised him for missing Romero’s tug on Cucurella’s hair inside a crowded penalty area and even less would have complained had he run to the screen and made the right call. Taylor would surely have preferred to be right with hindsight than wrong without.
It perhaps illustrates why Dean and VAR did not mix. He tells Jordan how he was reluctant to embrace VAR when it was first introduced to the Premier League in 2019-20. “When it first came in, I hated it,” he explains. “I’d refereed for 19 years, why do I need help?” That mindset had mellowed by the time he took up a dedicated VAR role with another former referee, Lee Mason, last season, but Dean and technology remained uncomfortable bedfellows to the end. He says he was happy to walk away, a “50-50” decision made between him and Webb. Dean’s lack of involvement following Webb’s arrival after the World Cup break, though, would suggest a parting was always inevitable.
