Jason Momoa will lead the long-awaited Minecraft movie, adding another major project to his filmography. No word yet on whether this will be live-action or animated.
Jason Momoa is set to star in Warner Bros.' live-action Minecraft movie. Momoa is the star of such hits as Aquaman, Dune, and the Apple TV+ series See. The actor has a number of high-profile projects coming up, including Netflix's adaptation of Slumberland, the western The Last Manhunt, and his highly anticipated DCEU sequel Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, which will debut in March 2023. Momoa also recently signed on to play the villain in Fast & Furious 10.
Minecraft is the popular video game from Mojang Studios and features block-style graphics that allow players to build intricate and immense structures. They can also participate in all manner of gaming modes, from survival to creative and beyond, making it one of the most versatile games available. Minecraft has spawned plenty of merchandise and content, from apparel, toys, books, an interactive TV show, and even its own convention, MineCon.
The Minecraft movie has been in development since as early as 2014 with numerous creatives jumping in and out of the mix. Initially, it was being produced by The LEGO Movie producer Roy Lee with The Adam Project's Shawn Levy on board to direct. Levy eventually dropped out, as he was unsure of how to bring Minecraft to life in live-action form, but Lee has stayed aboard the project continuously.
Momoa and Hess joining the Minecraft movie adds some significant weight to the project, as it has seemed to languish each time it changed hands in the past. Both Momoa and Hess have the spirit and charm that could make the movie something special, given their previous work. They have each dabbled in big-budget and small-budget fare and are sure to have a firm grasp on what Minecraft will be at this juncture, so this feels like the surest prospect yet that the film will happen.
