NEW: Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison will join the prosecution against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman has announced.
Minnesota's governor appointed state Attorney General Keith Ellison on Sunday to lead the prosecution of any cases arising from the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.
Gov. Tim Walz announced Ellison's appointment as lead prosecutor shortly after Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said he had asked Ellison to"assist" in the investigation. Former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin is charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in"We have the best person with Attorney General Ellison to pursue this case," Walz said.
Ellison, a Democrat who represented Minneapolis in Congress from 2007 to 2019, said repeatedly that it was too early to answer questions about the case, but he said he and Freeman would work together to see that justice is done for Floyd, whose family asked that he take over the case.
