As they were cutting the second hole, he woke up and crawled out on his own, uninjured.
A plumber who had disappeared under a Los Angeles County house for hours emerged safely after firefighters cut through the floor. He had apparently been sleeping.
Emergency crews were called around 6 p.m. Saturday to a home in Northridge. The homeowner said the plumber, a 50-year-old man, had gone into the crawlspace about three hours earlier and had not been heard from since. He did not respond to shouts or pounding on the floor. The Los Angeles Fire Department called in urban search-and-rescue specialists. In the 3-foot-tall crawlspace, they “noted a small portion of the still unresponsive worker’s body at a distance.”
The crew decided to cut through the floor with chainsaws to reach the man. As they were cutting the second hole, he woke up and crawled out on his own, uninjured, the fire department’s report said. He underwent medical evaluation at the scene, and an ambulance was not required.
