Mixon, a 2017 second-round pick now in his seventh season, was a captain for the first time last season.
of a four-day trial last Thursday. Mixon declined to speak with reporters on his first day back in an open locker room on Sunday, but one day later opted to take questions.
When asked if he had any regrets with how the offseason played out in terms of his role in the court cases being front and center, Mixon pointed out he wanted to keep the conversation to football but did offer a repeated thought on the topic.“It is a great thing for everything to be pretty much over with and to be able to hone in on being the best teammate I can possibly be, being the leader and captain that I am around the team. It’s a blessing to be here for another year,” Mixon said.
Mixon still has a civil case pending against him for an incident near his Anderson, Ohio home this summer that resulted in a minor being shot during a game of “Nerf Wars.” Cases are also outstanding against his sister and trainer who were at the house with him during the incident. Mixon, a 2017 second-round pick now in his seventh season, was a captain for the first time last season and stated many times on Monday his pride in that fact.As for if he ever felt the need to stand in front of his teammates and explain the cases that have surrounded him this offseason, including the road rage case that occurred on the day the club flew to Buffalo for a playoff game, he balked at the concept.
“I felt what’s understood don’t need to be explained,” said Mixon, who also agreed to a paycut as part of a restructured contract in July. “Everybody on the team knew what it was. Everybody knew what it is. In terms of that, I’m just going to keep on doing what I can to keep on being that positive role model around here. I’m just going to keep on doing what I can to building the leader and camaraderie around the locker room.
