Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia is not on the AL Division Series roster.
Bob NightengaleNEW YORK — CC Sabathia dressed quietly in the corner of the Yankees clubhouse Thursday, alone with his thoughts, wondering, praying, whether he has thrown his last professional pitch.
“That’s tough to hear,’’ said Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, one of Sabathia’s closest friends on the team. “You know, he’s been a leader in this clubhouse, a leader of this team for so many years. His fire and energy that he shows on a daily basis when he takes the ball is something that’s worn off on a lot of us.
He leads all pitchers with 251 victories, 3,093 strikeouts, 3,577 ⅓ innings since the turn of the century. He is just one of 14 pitchers in baseball history to win at least 250 games and strike out 3,000 hitters.He just never imagined his final game would be a relief appearance, the first of his career, against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sept. 24, preparing for a bullpen role in the postseason.
