With Hurricane Hilary expected to make landfall in southern California Sunday night, Major League Baseball moved up games for all three teams in the region to Saturday to create split doubleheaders.
The National League West’s San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers and the American League West’s Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are all in the middle of homestand series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays respectively.
MLB preserved the originally scheduled afternoon games for Saturday, and moved up the Sunday games, series-enders for all three sets of teams, to Saturday night. Tickets for the later games will be honored. The Padres will start games at 12:10 p.m. and 5:40 p.m. PDT, the Dodgers will start games at noon and 6:10 p.m. PDT, and the Angels will start games at 1:07 p.m. and 6:07 p.m. PDT.
The National Weather Service projected Friday that, by the time Hilary reaches southern California it will have lost wind velocity and dropped below 74 miles per hour. Falling below that threshold would recategorize Hilary from a hurricane to a tropical storm, as long as wind speeds remain above 39 miles per hour.
No matter the category, Hilary is expected to bring a deluge of rainfall to southern California, with three to six inches expected across the region as well as southern Nevada. Some isolated pockets are expected to get up to 10 inches of rain.
