Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin signalled a U.S.-U.K. trade deal could be inked this year, but Britain's plans to hike taxes on U.S. tech giants could threatened the deal.
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told Davos a U.S.-U.K. trade deal could be signed this year: Senior members of the Trump administration signalled that a post-Brexit trade deal between the U.S. and U.K. could be inked this year but Britain’s plan to tax U.S. tech giants overshadow the trade talks.
The U.S. has said it would enact retaliatory tariffs on Britain if the taxes go ahead, while Britain’s treasury secretary, Sajid Javid, told Davos that a 2% tax would be rolled out from April. The bill was passed three months after Johnson had hoped to exit the EU. His efforts last year to rush through the bill triggered a deadlock between lawmakers and eventually led to a general election in December, in which Johnson’s party secured the majority needed to push it through Parliament.: France was planning to impose a 3% levy on Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple, known as the GAFA tax.
