Modern slavery crime reports in the UK this year have soared to 11 times higher than in 2015, data obtained by theipaper has revealed 🔴 Investigation by mollyblackall

Data secured under Freedom of Information laws from 35 police forces in England and Wales showed that in 2015, the average number of modern slavery crime reports held by a police force was just 12. By October 2022, this was 11 times higher with the average number of reports recorded by a police force standing at 140.

Olive, 39, left China after her son was kidnapped and her husband became abusive. He had gambled extensively and had fallen into financial difficulties. Olive said she was told she could pay back his debts by working in a restaurant and as a childminder in the UK. Lily*, a 27-year-old woman from Vietnam, was working on a farm in 2013 when she was approached by two men offering to take her for work abroad. Having separated from an abusive husband and working to care for her son, she agreed. Lily was taken to Russia, where her passport was seized and she was made to work in a factory without pay. She was repeatedly raped by male workers.

Samuel was caught by British police and spent 20 days in a detention centre before being moved to a hotel. During this time, Samuel met a man who told him the police would send him back to Egypt, and offered him work on a construction site and a place to stay. Modern slavery crime reports peaked in 2020, with the charity Anti-Slavery saying the coronavirus pandemic “exacerbated the conditions that allow modern slavery to thrive, including poverty, insecurity and isolation.”said it had recorded a 62 per cent surge in the number of people rescued from modern slavery.

The 2022 Global Estimates of Modern Slavery found that 49.6 million people are living in slavery worldwide, equating to 1 in every 150. This marks an increase of 9.3 million since the last global estimates in 2017.
