At a press briefing this afternoon, Rendi Murphree, an epidemiologist and director of the disease surveillance for the Mobile County Health Department, said the patient was a Mobile County resident who sought healthcare earlier in the week.“We don’t want them to be scared, but we want them to be conscious, and we want them to be aware,” Murphree said.
In a national media call with leaders from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said more than 11,000 cases of monkeypox have been detected globally, with 1,470 cases across 44 states in the U.S. CDC officials expect an increase in monkeypox cases through July and August, but they believe they have sufficient testing capacity. The demand for vaccines is higher than the current supply, Walensky said, but officials are prioritizing communities seeing increasing cases.Monkeypox is not as contagious as COVID, with no deaths and no cases in healthcare workers or children.
