Another rubber bale from a World War II Nazi cargo ship washed ashore at a Texas beach this week

Another World War II era rubber bail washed ashore Mustang Island State Park this week, part of many that have been washing ashore in Texas and Florida since 2020.Park Ranger Eric Ehrlich had no idea the rubber bales washing ashore on the beaches Mustang Island State Park came from a Nazi Germany cargo ship obliterated by the U.S. in 1944.

He threw away the first rubber block he found — he considered it part of the trash and debris that washes ashore on the 18-mile barrier island beach in Corpus Christi. It wasn't until Ehrlich learned from thethat the rubber blocks may come from a German cargo ship that was sunk by the United States in 1944 off the coast of Brazil. He said because they are short-staffed at the moment, it may take a while for them to clear it from the beach.

"If someone wants it for research or something, and they get to me before we get it in the dumpster, I'm happy to let them have it," Ehrlich said."I have no use for it and it's kind of just taking up space on the beach."
