But for the 3,045 people who reported sexual assault, the numbers may not be so settling.
The report found "nonconsensual touching of a sexual body part" to be the most common form of assault reported during an Uber ride, with 1,560 incidents reported, compared with 1,440 in 2017. "Nonconsensual sexual penetration" was the least reported form of assault, with 235 reports in 2018, compared with 229 in 2017. In 54% of sexual assault reports, the driver was the accused party, and in 45% of reports, the rider was the accused .
Uber received about 6,000 sexual assault reports between 2017 and 2018, which calculates to an average of eight assault reports per day., with 58 reported in 2018, and 49 in 2017. These fatalities included riders and drivers, and non-Uber drivers and pedestrians as well. Of the Uber-related fatal crashes in 2017 and 2018, 21 people were Uber riders and 16 were Uber drivers. The report also counted fatal physical assaults during Uber rides, finding 19 total over both years.
In context, only 0.0003% of rides in 2017 and 2018 included one of the safety issues studied by Uber, according to the report. The report stressed that Uber's traffic- fatality rate is about half of the national average, and cited a 2019 national study that found nearly 44% of U.S. women and nearly 25% of U.S. men will experience sexual violence in their lifetime.
