More than 600 firefighters, including reinforcements from several European countries, backed by a fleet of water-dropping planes and helicopters are battling three persistent major wildfires in Greece, two of which have been raging for days.
Firetrucks are seen on a road in burned forest near the Fyli suburb, northwest Athens, Greece, Friday, Aug. 25, 2023. Authorities battling a major wildfire in northeastern Greece that has been described as the European Union's largest single fire recorded have recovered another body, the fire department says, bringing the total death toll of wildfires in Greece this week to 21.
The blaze, one of the largest single wildfires ever to have struck a European Union country, has decimated vast tracts of forest and burnt homes in the outlying areas of the city of Alexandroupolis. On Sunday, 295 firefighters, seven planes and five helicopters were tackling it, the fire department said.
Copernicus is the EU space program’s Earth observation component and uses satellite imagery to provide mapping data. A third major wildfire started on Saturday on the Cycladic island of Andros and was still burning out of control Sunday, with 73 firefighters, two planes and two helicopters dousing the blaze. Lightning strikes are suspected of having sparked that wildfire.
