Changes to the way GCSE French and German are marked mean more pupils could get top grades on results day on Thursday
More pupils could be getting high grades in languages when they open their GCSE results on Thursday . That's because examiners have been told to mark French and German GCSE papers more generously. The change is being made to bring the subjects in line with grades for Spanish.
'Too difficult' Last year, the exam boards were told to make adjustments to their grading processes for French and German to bring them more in line with Spanish marking. More positive adjustments will be made this summer, ahead of the 2024 results.'We wanted to get to the point where in languages, if a student or group of students had sat either French, German or Spanish, their likelihood of getting any particular grade would have been broadly speaking, evenly balanced.
Less pupils choosing languages It’s also hoped the change to German and French marking will encourage more teenagers to choose the subjects.
