Morecambe, once a bustling seaside resort, is looking to rejuvenate itself with the potential arrival of the Eden Project North and other redevelopment projects. The town's optimism is slowly returning as plans for a new hotel, restoration of the Winter Gardens, and redevelopment of the old Frontierland theme park site take shape.
Morecambe is a town looking to transform its fortunes. Once a bustling seaside resort , its stock has taken fallen sharply since its mid-20th century peak as a tourist destination.
At 278 metres long, it included a large pier head which was served by steamers until 1914. A grand palatial pavilion was added near the end of the 1890s that was dubbed the 'Taj Mahal of the North'. A photograph from the Lancashire Red Rose archives shows the pier and pavilion engulfed in flames and smoke as crowds have stopped to watch helplessly from the seafront. Following the devastating fire, a new 2000 seat pavilion and ballroom were built, this time in the Art Deco style.
Having been declared unsafe in 1987, a final fire destroyed the pavilion and ballroom on March 31, 1991. It proved the end of Morecambe's once grand Central Pavilion, which was demolished the following year. But just like the fate that would befall Central Pier years later, the West End Pavilion was devastated by a fire on March 31, 1917. An account in the Morecambe Visitor newspaper the following week, described the sheer extent of the damage.
