Morecambe visitor information centre facing closure and Platform venue needs revamp, council warned
Morecambe’s Visitor Information Centre, based inside the larger Platform venue recently used by Prime minister Rishi Sunak in his levelling-up tour, faces closure as Lancaster City Council considers cuts in its new budget, councillors have heard.
Labour Coun Anne Whitehead, a member of the city council’s multi-party cabinet, mentioned the venues as she gave a budget plan update. She said: “It has been particularly challenging because of spiralling inflation and years of government underfunding. But our priorities are to protect front-line services for the public. ”
“Arts, culture and events are key aspects of the district. We will continue to seek support, work in partnership and source external funding. Conservative Coun Melanie Guilding said: “I’m appalled about the idea to close the visitor centre in future. I was there just the other day. There were a number of people there who all said what a fantastic place it was. Why are we thinking of closing it when there are all these people are going?
